While the commercial interests in North America and Europe may continue to keep focuses on internal combustion engines, China's auto industry, with a lot of help from government, would make much more investments in electric and hybrid as a transition technology. Which technology do you think will become the development trend for the auto industry in China? What are the future prospects for new energy vehicles in Chinese market?

Brian Link/Jeff Henning: As I said China has the opportunity to develop alternative vehicles because China doesn't have a long history to make internal combustion engines. Given that development of plug-in, electric or hybrid vehicles are still in their initial stage, Chinese companies are at less of a competitive disadvantage compared with foreign companies. The Chinese government is more willing to invest this field rather than in traditional engines. The government has already taken numerous steps to promote the development of alternative powertrain technology among China's vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

Another advantage lies in that most passenger vehicles in China are used for neighborhood and city driving, which is ideal for EV applications. And with much of China's infrastructure still being built, the accommodation of EV charging stations is more easily put into place versus the retrofitting approach required in most developed countries.

In addition, it depends on customers need to popularize a new technology. Customers in European are getting used to traditional fuel engine vehicles with more advanced, fuel efficient technologies but Chinese customers, most of them first-time buyers, are more likely to accept new and different things. And when everything being equal, Chinese consumes may naturally gravitate toward a local brand. EV technology may offer the best opportunity to close the technology gap and level, or even leapfrog the playing field.

Gasgoo.com: The Obama administration has decided to boost the US' average fuel economy (CAFE) for new models to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. China, on the other hand, is striving to carry out "national IV standard, which is equivalent to Euro I standard, nationwide before 2011. Do you think that environment protection is more important that economic growth? Do you have any advices for China to develop a healthy, environment-friendly auto industry?

Brian Link/Jeff Henning: I don't think one issue is more important than the other. I think they have to be balanced. With the use of modern technology and modern management techniques, it is possible to bring about this balance, to make explicit the trade-off between environmental protection and economic growth. Any growth that is not environmentally benign will not be sustainable.

This year's Second Beijing Youth Drama Festival, held on September 8-27, featured 22 dramatic works that were put together by 34 directors and choreographers. The plays, along with lectures and seminars, were presented on 10 different stages around Beijing. The festival drew an audience of more than 30,000.</P]<P]The plays were chosen from 80 entries whose creators come from Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Jinan and Macao and countries like Malaysia and the United States.</P]<P]"The festival features twice as many young directors as those that were invited last year and there is also an increase in female directors," said a festival spokeswoman.</P]<P]Promising dramatists, veteran playwrights and stage artists attended the opening ceremony for the festival at Beijing's Beehive Theater on September 7. Among them was China's iconic drama director Meng Jinghui.</P]<P]"Young drama directors and playwrights must express and convey their ideas. They have to present their understanding of contemporary society. That is the most important aspect of their creative efforts," Meng said.</P]<P]Renowned Chinese actor Pu Cunxin of the Beijing People's Art Theater said young directors look at the world from a fresh, original perspective.</P]<P]"Some people think that the young are too self-centered. But I have found their free thinking and devotion very admirable," Pu said. "They never try to flatter anyone. Meng said at the last session of the festival that young directors would bring change to China's dramatic landscape. But others held that the youth festival is more like a playground for young directors to amuse themselves while at the same time losing their audiences.</P]<P]Theater devotee Ge Zi said that the increasing number of entertainment options have led to a diminishing drama audience while at the same time remaining fans find there are few good plays to enjoy. Innovation only on the level of formality and too much philosophical thinking have undermined the power of the medium, Ge said.</P]<P]"It's not possible for the audience to adapt to the drama, nor the other way around. It's just an interaction between the two," said director Shao Zehui.</P]<P]Director Kang He does not concern himself with audience's complaints of being unable to understand a work of drama.</P]<P]"The general drama audience in China is still at a relatively low level. That is why they don't understand the performance. HONG KONG, March 13 - Hong Kong's jobless rateprobably rose to 4.9 percent in December-February, the highestsince October 2006 as lay-offs accelerated amid a deepeningeconomic recession, a Reuters survey showed on Friday.</p]
Analysts said some companies laid off staff before andafter the Lunar New Year holiday in late January.</p]
"At this point, given the economy is quite weak I think theunemployment rate could go to 6 percent within a few months,"said Eric Tsang, an analyst at Calyon.</p]
"The outlook will depend on whether the governmentintroduces further stimulus measures to support the economy."</p]
The unemployment rate, calculated on a three-monthseasonally adjusted average, stood at 4.6 percent inNovember-January.</p]
Financial Secretary John Tsang said after his annual budgetthis month that further steps to stimulate the economy could beforthcoming later in the year.</p]
As a trading and financial hub, Hong Kong is being hit hardby the global economic downturn and financial crisis.</p]
Investment banks have laid off staff as part of global cutsin headcount, although not as many as in New York or London,and trade-related companies have been hurt by double-digitdeclines in exports since December as global consumer demanddries up.</p]
The government forecasts the economy will contract 2 to 3percent this year after average annual growth of 6.3 percentover the past five years.</p]
Some 1,266 companies were declared bankrupt in January, 37percent more than the same month a year earlier, and thegovernment has warned that more lay-offs are likely.</p]
It has brought forward infrastructure projects and createdmore civil service jobs to curb unemployment.</p]

The total installed capacity of the wind farms is 250,000 kw. The newly-founded JV, located in Tongliao city, will be engaged in developing the two wind farms. </p]
One of the wind farm with a capacity of 50,000 kw has already started operations in Huolin Gol City, while the other one is scheduled to start operation in 2009, the company said.</p]

Dec. 19, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Cathay Pacific Airways<293>, the largest carrier in Hong Kong, is likely to face even tougher challenges in the coming months, the Standard reported, citing Tony Tyler, CEO with the company, as saying.</p]
The market condition is still vague currently, which will probably deteriorate the economic situation, according to Tyler's statement in the company's monthly internal magazine.</p]
In the face of the declining air traffic demand, Cathay Pacific has trimmed growth target and grounded aircrafts. It also offered staff the unpaid leave to reduce labor costs.</p]
Cathay Pacific said last week its passenger throughput, including its unit Dragonair, fell 2.2% to 1.98 million in November as a result of budget control of business travels caused by the global financial crisis, China Knowledge reported earlier.</p]
Passenger load factor for the month fell to 75.7%, representing a year-on-year decrease of 4.7%. The volume of cargo it carried last month dropped 15.4% year on year to 132,000 tons.</p]
During the Jan.-Nov. period, the total number of passengers carried climbed 8.1% to 22.85 million, and the cargo throughput also rose slightly by 0.6% to 1.53 million tons.</p]

The sales represented about 77% of its annual target of RMB 17 billion for 2009.</P]<P]Shares of Shimao Property rose 7.83% to end at HK$12.94 today.</P]

PetroChina to purchase office buildings from Citychamp DartongPublished: 20 Mar 2009 00:48:22 PST<p class="authorInfor"]</p]<!--begin CK content--]<P]Mar. 20, 2009 (China Knowledge) - A Beijing branch of PetroChina<601857><857><PTR>, which is the country's largest oil producer and is also involved in the refining business, plans to purchase an office building and 200 underground parking spaces in Beijing's Chongwen District from Citychamp Dartong Co Ltd<600067>, resources reported.</P]<P]The office building, covering floor area of 25,500 square meters, will sell for RMB 13,500 per square meter. The underground parking spaces are expected to sell for RMB 160,000 each. </P]<P]Reportedly, PetroChina's subsidiary, China Petroleum Hua You Beijing Service Corp, has bought 52,380 square meters of office space in Beijing's Chaoyang District for RMB 770 million, or RMB 14,700 per square meter, from Citychamp Dartong. </P]<P]Citychamp Dartong had received RMB 600 million from the subsidiary at the end of last September. <BR]</P]

A unit of the group, No. 5 Engineering Co Ltd, will be in charge of concrete and aggregate processing services, and will design, construct and run a plant that will supply 3.4 million cubic meters of concrete and 8 million tons of aggregates for the hydropower project, said the statement.</P]<P]The Zangmu Hydropower Station, situated in the middle reach of the Brahmaputra River, is funded by Tibet Power Generation Co Ltd of China Huaneng Group, the largest power generator in China, and will be finished by the end of December 2015.

Chin's top coal miner, Shenhua Group Corp, plans to build strategic coal reserves, deep-water berths, and power generation projects in the southeastern city of Fuzhou, a local paper reported.</p]
The coal hub will be built in Luoyuan Bay, a planned deep-water harbor area with the ambition to become a major bulk commodities port in southeastern China, the Fuzhou Daily said.</p]
"Based on the arrangement of the state's strategic coal reserves, the two parties have reached a cooperation agreement to build a number of deep-water berths, environment-friendly state-level strategic coal reserves, a large international bulk commodities port, large thermal power stations and to form large fleets to serve local firms and the coal base," the paper said.</p]
The paper did not give details on Shenhua's investment scale, capacity of the reserves, or time frame for the project, but said Fuzhou's government vows to help the project start construction as soon as possible.</p]
Shenhua Group's listed arm, China Shenhua Energy, posted record quarterly profits on higher sales and output, and said it expected a fledgling economic recovery in the country and the region to boost demand for coal.</p]

Siemens to supply 100 high-speed trains to ChinaPublished: 22 Mar 2009 20:10:20 PST<p class="authorInfor"]</p]<!--begin CK content--]<P]Mar. 23, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Siemens AG, Europe's largest engineering conglomerate, announced on Friday that it had received an order worth EUR 750 million from China to supply 100 high-speed trains for the country's Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway line, sources reported.</P]<P]Siemens said that 70 trains under the deal would be produced at its plant in Tangshan, while its Changchun plant would be producing the remaining 30. Simens' plants in Germany, Austria, Shanghai, Tianjin and Jinan will provide components such as electrical equipment and chassis for the project. </P]<P]The high-speed trains will shorten the travel hour between the two cities to four hours. The Beijing-Shanghai route is set to start operation in 2010.<BR]</P]

As many young Chinese artists turn to modern art forms such as oil painting, sculpture, installation and photography, the future of traditional Chinese painting, despite its history of thousands of years, is facing a crisis, with few young people taking up the art.</p]
According to art critics and collectors, the current situation is partly a reflection of modern day trends. Many people prefer to hang contemporary art in their homes rather than traditional Chinese landscapes. Exhibitions of traditional Chinese works are also witnessing a decline in attendees while new-media shows are often packed with visitors. Many art colleges have even cancelled traditional Chinese painting courses.</p]
An important part of China’s cultural heritage, traditional Chinese painting differs from its modern-day counterparts both in materials and technique. Traditional Chinese paintings are created using brushes and ink on rice paper, almost the same as calligraphy.</p]
“Today’s young artists in China are unwilling to be engaged in such a ‘cold’ art form,” said Shen Hu, director of the academic department of Liu Haisu Art Museum. With this attitude becoming more prevalent, Shen said that a question mark hangs over the future of the ancient art.</p]
Shen is also one of the judges of the Shanghai Grand Fine Arts Exhibition of Young Artists, a biennial event that has been credited for its achievements at selecting and promoting promising young artists since 1986.</p]
Shen said that in recent years, the event has seen an overall decrease in the standards of traditional Chinese painting, in terms of both quantity and quality of works.</p]
“It is hard to pick out even one good painting this year,” said Shen, standing in front of over 400 pieces of traditional Chinese painting submitted by young artists from across the country. This year’s exhibition will run from October 20 to November 11 and at present the job of selecting works is underway.</p]
“Most of these works are poor in quality. A large number of participating artists don’t even know the basic skills of traditional Chinese painting,” Shen added.</p]
Compared to nearly 2000 submitted oil paintings, among which many display excellent skills and creativity, the traditional Chinese paintings pale in comparison, Shen explained.</p]
According to Shen, in 2005 and 2007, traditional Chinese paintings constituted less than a quarter of the number of oil paintings exhibited and this year the situation will be even worse. “It’s definitely true that traditional Chinese painting is now no longer the main art form in China,” he said.</p]
Among the reasons behind the fall in the popularity of traditional Chinese painting is the overwhelming success of the Chinese modern art market, according to Chen Jialing, one of the few artists who has remained committed to traditional painting.</p]
“It is much easier to make money by creating an oil painting than traditional Chinese painting, because the contemporary Chinese art market is booming,” Chen explained.</p]
Modern works by big names such as Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun and Fang Lijun are selling for millions of dollars at international auctions with young artists encouraged to follow in their footsteps.</p]
On the contrary, except for classic works by several late art masters like Xu Beihong, Li Keran and Fu Baoshi, traditional Chinese paintings are not commanding the same prices, with many traditional painters forced to look elsewhere to make a living.</p]

Final talks are still going on, according to the statement.</P]<P]In June, Pierre Cardin announced that it was in talks with two Chinese firms to sell part of its China business, including textile and accessory licenses, for EUR 200 million.</P]<P]Two Guangzhou-based firms, Jiangsheng Trading Co Ltd and Guangzhou Cardanro Development Co Ltd, were reportedly the two potential buyers. However, Jiangsheng later denied the reports to Reuters.</P]<P]The French fashion giant's founder, Pierre Cardin, will fly to China next month to sign an agreement with a consortium of four Wenzhou businessmen to transfer ownership of some of its business in China, according to a Hong Kong newspaper.</P]<P]Pierre Cardin is one of the first Western fashion brands to enter the Chinese market and currently owns about 800 licenses worldwide.
